The Ex Idols - Social Kill

Consider the words of Gary Finneran. Start with one of the better songs on the debut CD by Finneran's band, Ex-Idols. "I'm insane," Finneran screams. "And I might not hear you say/`Please don't kill me/Please don't kill me anymore.'"
The song is titled "I Love You."
Here's Finneran again, this time on "Social Kill," the CD's equally sensitive title cut: "I'm just a bum with no money to spend/And I know I said I love you/But I fucked your friend."
He's a real treasure, that Gary Finneran.
"They're just lyrics," Finneran says with a laugh from his manager's office in L.A. "I try to be creative when I write a song. But I try to keep the lyrics kind of simple, too."
Mission accomplished. Indeed, Finneran repeatedly achieves both goals, in varying degrees, on Social Kill's 14-song fun house of killer chords and miserable mindsets.
Finneran seems like a nice enough sort on the phone. There's nary a hint of the budding psychotic who sneer-sings "Please don't kill me/So I can kill you" on the aforementioned "Go Away." Instead, Finneran comes off as an upbeat kind of guy. He's not the easiest conversationalist on the block, but he talks with enthusiasm when the subject suits him right. For instance, Finneran gets especially chipper in recounting Ex-Idols' recent evolution from being just another L.A. band to just another L.A. band with a recording deal.
"We've gone through it all, like everyone else," Finneran says of Ex-Idols' survival skills in and around Hollywood. "We've all done odd jobs, things like telemarketing, working at one-hour-photo places, selling latex gloves. You work at a job for six months and then quit and collect unemployment, and all the time, you're working on your band every night, practicing, taping rehearsals and trying to get a demo out."
That mix of work ethic and patience eventually paid off, with the help of simple good fortune.
"It was total chance," Finneran says of the band's deal last year with Relativity Records. "We had this demo, it was really good, it cost a lot of money--we were all working at the time--and we sent it to 30 record companies. This one guy [at Relativity] happened to like one little part of one of the songs. He flew out and met us, liked us and that's all it was."
Thus the recent release of Social Kill, a bruiser of a disc. Finneran's vocals, along with the considerable crunch of guitarist Duke Decter, make it sound like the band survived a trip to the nether regions of metal by way of old-timey punk. Decter comes through as the band's most valuable weapon; he's got a noticeable knack for cranking power chords straight from Steve Jones' glory days with the Pistols and the Professionals.
Decter joined Ex-Idols after the band's original guitarist was dismissed because of "creative conflict." It was, according to Finneran, a case of "one guy pulling when everybody else is pushing."
With the addition of Decter, Ex-Idols' otherwise-generic punk sound put on some weight. "Duke is a real straight, simple player," Finneran says, adding that "he's not one of these guys trying to play straight and simple. You can tell with those guys. Duke's for real."
Finneran's for real, too. Sort of.
"I'm a poser," he says, laughing. "I mean, who isn't, you know? I wasn't into punk ten years ago when there really was a punk scene. I'm like a lot of people who kind of got into it four years ago or three years ago."
The latest new wave of old-wave punk is big fashion these days, something Finneran's well aware of.
"When you're in a band now and you're playing punk, it really is kind of ridiculous," he says. "You have Green Day and you have Offspring and any one of a thousand other punk bands coming out every second. But that wasn't us."
Indeed, Finneran doesn't apologize for the more metal-oriented efforts on his r‚sum‚. When told his vocals occasionally ooze a hint of David Lee Roth schmaltz, Finneran proudly mentions that one of his previous bands specialized in Van Halen cover songs. As for Ex-Idols' other bloodlines, Decter comes from a firmer punk background. He played in a number of Florida acts, including the moderately successful Disorderly Conduct and F. Originally from Florida, as well, is bassist Sean DeMott, though for years, he's been anchored in Hollywood with Finneran. The same goes for drummer Lance Porter, an Arizona native, born and raised in Page.
Finneran and his rhythm section tried to kick-start several Hollywood-based bands over the years. Apart from Ex-Idols, they all died well short of the promised land.
"It can get grueling, trying to make it," Finneran says. "I give a thumbs up to anyone in a band who's out there still trying."
Not that Finneran makes the payoff sound like eternal bliss.
"It really doesn't mean anything to be signed," he says. "It just means you get to record for lots of money. You get to put your music down on record and make it sound really big."

T.S.O.L. - Revenge

Revenge is the fourth studio album by the American rock band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), released in 1986 through Enigma Records. With increased exposure brought on by continuous touring, and influenced by the growing hard rock scene in their native Southern California, the band moved away from the punk- and gothic rock-influenced sound of their past in favor of simpler rock numbers. To promote the album, two songs were used in film soundtracks: "Nothin' for You" in The Return of the Living Dead (1985) and "Revenge" in Dangerously Close (1986). "Revenge" and "Colors (Take Me Away)" were also made into the band's first music videos

Legal Weapon - Squeeze Me Like An Anaconda

Legal Weapon are a Southern California punk band, initially composed of singer Kat Arthur, guitarist Brian Hansen, drummer Charlie Vartanian, bassist Patricia Morrison (formerly of The Bags and later of The Gun Club, The Sisters of Mercy and The Damned) and guitarist Mike R. Livingston.

The band's early full-length albums Death of Innocence (for which their lineup included Steve Soto and Frank Agnew of The Adolescents) and Your Weapon were well-received; its later efforts less so. With her powerful voice, Kat Arthur is often called "the Janis Joplin of punk".

Excerpt of a Scott "Deluxe" Drake interview in "Life in a bungalo" :

The liner notes of the Suicide Kings "Teenage Disaster" (Sympathy for the Record Industry) album make you guys seem like seedy characters; any truth to those rumors? Do you still have your old manager’s watch? I’ve never been convicted of anything. Speaking of the Suicide Kings, I bought this CD (maybe mid-1997?) called "The Humpers : High and Mighty Suicide Kings" (on a label I hadn’t heard of before and haven’t since Sonic Records). I’m pretty sure it’s a bootleg, but the sound quality is very good (better the stuff on the SFTRI album). It’s got all the songs off of the Suicide Kings actual LP plus some bonus stuff. The liner notes say it should be considered the first Humpers album. Have you seen this particular release? Who is “Pinky Flamingo?

Scott : - That is a bootleg and should NOT be considered a Humpers’ album, it’s a Suicide Kings album. The two were very different bands. The liner notes on that thing are complete nonsense. Pinky Flamingo was the singer of the Suicide Kings; he hasn’t played in any bands recently.

"Punknroll has group sex with the Stooges, New York Dolls, and GnR to create the Daggers. It's really catchy and fun to rock out to while tapping your feet, sneering and trying to look cooler than you really are." -- Maximum Rock N Roll

Cheetah Chrome - Alive In Detroit

Cheetah Chrome (born Eugene O'Connor, February 18, 1955, Cleveland, Ohio) is an American musician who achieved fame as a guitarist for Rocket From the Tombs and the punk rock band, The Dead Boys.[1]

After the Dead Boys break up, Cheetah Chrome played around New York City (mostly at Max's Kansas City) doing shows with the Stilettos, as well as his own band Cheetah Chrome and the Casualties. He recorded a single for ORK Records, "Still Wanna Die/Take Me Home", recorded by Atlantic Records co-founder Herb Abramson. Shortly thereafter, he played on Ronnie Spector's debut solo album Siren. In 1980, he played guitar for Nico at New York's Squat Theatre as well as Max's Kansas City. He appeared on several recordings during the 1980s, most notably his own "Cheetah Chrome and the Ghetto Dogs" (Get Hip) and Jeff Dahl's " I Kill Me" (Sympathy For The Record Industry). He also rejoined the Dead Boys for the ill fated reunions of the late 1980s.

In the 1990s, Chrome moved to Nashville, Tennessee and recorded a live album Alive in Detroit (DUI) at Lili's in Hamtramck, Michigan. In the 2002, he played guitar on several track for False Alarm's Fuck ‘Em All We've All Ready (Now) Won!.In 2003, after the release of The Day the Earth Met the Rocket from the Tombs, he reformed Rocket From The Tombs with David Thomas, Craig Bell, with Steve Mehlman (Pere Ubu) on drums and Richard Lloyd (Television) replacing the late Peter Laughner. [1] The reincarnation of the group toured in 2003 and 2006. In summer 2003 it entered the studio to record some of the band's old material for the first time. The recordings were released as Rocket Redux (SmogVeil).

Chrome did a US West coast tour in April 2004( backed by Sweet justice) as well as a 10 date Midwest/East coast tour as guitarist in Texas Terri's band in July. At the end of July he headlined "Festimal" in Cedeira,Spain. In 2005, the members of Rocket From The Tombs flew to Germany to headline one night (The Buzzcocks headlined the other) of the International Punk Kongress in Kassel; then, in 2006, they reconvened in Cleveland, Ohio to write material for a new record. This material became the single "I Sell Soul/Romeo and Juliet", released in 2010, and the full length album " Barfly, released in 2011.In 2007 Chrome played periodic solo shows, including headlining the Road To Ruins festival in Rome, Italy (backed by Unnatural Axe).

In May 2008, on the way home from the "Joey Ramone Birthday Bash", Chrome had a chance meeting at LaGuardia Airport with the members of Joan Jett's band The Blackhearts, including drummer Thommy Price, with whom he had played on Ronnie Spector's "Siren". This led to several NYC area shows with The Blackhearts as his band, including a live performance on WFMU in NJ.In 2009, after repeated suggestions that he write a book from a friend who worked at Voyageur Press in Minneapolis,MN, Chrome relented and submitted a sample chapter to them in Spring 2009. He signed a book deal with Voyageur, and began writing his autobiography.

In the Fall of 2009, Chrome got together with old friend Sylvain Sylvain to record an EP on the suggestion of SmogVeil Records head Frank Mauceri. They recruited Thommy Price and Enzo Pennizotto from The Blackhearts as a rhythm section, naming themselves The Batusis after the dance from the hit 60's TV show "Batman". They performed two shows at SXSW 2010;Price and Penizzotto were unable to do live shows with The Batusis, due to their schedule with Jett, and were replaced by Chuck Garric of Alice Cooper's band on bass, and Lez Warner, formerly of The Cult on drums. The 4 song ( "Big Cat Stomp/What You Lack In Brains/Bury You Alive/ Blues Theme") EP was released in May 2010. A UK tour had to be canceled due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland, but they toured the US extensively through December 2010 with Warner on drums and another former Blackheart,Sean Koos,on bass.

In September 2010 "Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy's Tale From The Front Lines Of Punk Rock" was published to a very warm reception from the public and 5 Star reviews from critics. Chrome participated in the February/ West Coast and April/ Midwest-East Coast "Cleveland Confidential Book Tour" with fellow Cleveland musicians and authors Mike Hudson of the Pagans and Bob Pfeiffer of Human Switchboard. Stops included the Experience Music Project in Seattle, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Exile on Bowery @ Bowery Electric in NYC and the GRAMMY Museum at L.A Live in Los Angeles. At the end of a week long RFTT tour in December 2011,Chrome announced to the band that he had decided to stop touring extensively after 2012.This has been misconstrued as his "retirement", which is not the case. While he planned to honor any shows they booked in 2012, they chose to get another guitar player for the upcoming European tour in May 2012.

Chrome remains a non-touring member of RFTT, and will record and perform with the band in the future. Chrome says he will continue to perform live and even do short tours (7–10 days) periodically right up until he "kicks it". In February 2012 Chrome became Creative Director of A&R/Director of Special Projects for Plowboy Records, an alternative/legacy label being launched by Shannon Pollard, grandson of Country legend Eddy Arnold, and music historian / author Don Cusic. This was officially announced on May 15, 2012. Chrome is currently producing a tribute record to Arnold by various artists at RCA Studio B in Nashville; as well as preparing a new full length release by The Batusis.

In 2013, an American made motion picture titled CBGB will be released to theaters. Actor Rupert Grint, best known for his work in the Harry Potter films will play Chrome while Justin Bartha, best known for his work in The Hangover trilogy will play Stiv Bators.

Dead boys - 3rd Generation Nation

The Dead Boys evolved out of the band Rocket From The Tombs and were originally called Frankenstein. When the band members relocated to New York City in July 1976, they adopted the Dead Boys moniker which came from the RFTT song "Down In Flames".

Moving to New York City at the encouragement of Joey Ramone, the Ramones' lead singer, the Dead Boys quickly gained notoriety for their outrageous live performances. Lewd gestures and profanity were the norm. On more than one occasion, lead singer Stiv Bators slashed his stomach with his mic stand. They frequently played at the legendary rock club CBGB and in 1977 they released their debut album, Young, Loud and Snotty, produced by Genya Ravan. Their song "Sonic Reducer" is often regarded as one of the classics of the punk genre, with Allmusic calling it "one of punk's great anthems."[1]

Sire Records pressured the group to change their look and sound to appeal more to the U.S. mainstream (which had yet to embrace punk on the level seen in the UK) and this contributed to Dead Boys breaking up in 1979.[2] Several 1979 performances were featured in the 1980 film, D.O.A.. A few months after the breakup the band had to reunite to record a live album and thus fulfill their contractual obligations. To exact revenge on the label, Bators purposely sang off mic and the resulting recording was unusable. When the material eventually surfaced on Bomp! Records, Bators had re-recorded the vocals in a studio.

Bators' subsequent career
Bators recorded a solo album, Disconnected, on Line Records. Bators later formed Lords of the New Church with Brian James from The Damned and Dave Tregunna from Sham 69. They released several albums on IRS Records, including the keyboard-laden hit single "Open Your Eyes" and a cover of "Like A Virgin".

Blitz's subsequent career
After leaving the Dead Boys and New York City in 1980, Johnny Blitz (John Madansky) moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his wife "B Girl" Lucasta Ross. He hooked up with singer/guitarist/song writer "Leo DeLyon" (Leonard Nieberg) and bassist Tommy "Gun" Keating from power punk trio "The Blitz" (no association to Johnny's moniker "Blitz") . Johnny and Leo later formed a band called "Slaughterhouse" with Mark Crosley on Bass playing Toronto's top club and concert venues with a large fan following that guaranteed a packed audience at every gig. Johnny's band "Slaughterhouse" and Cheetah's band "Cheetah Chrome and Skells" headlined on Saturday, August 6, 1983 at New York City's CBGB's.

"Dead Boy" bassist Jeff Magnum came to see his old bandmates and at the end of the night, he, Cheetah and Blitz encored the show with some "Dead Boys" songs that brought the house down. After Johnny and Lucasta split, he married Lynn Hansen and fathered 3 boys: Luke, Jake and Cole. Johnny recently achieved "grandfather" status with the arrival of "Hannah," care of his eldest son Luke and his wife. Johnny and Leo went on to form "The Tribe" with keyboard player Pauline Groen and bassist Tommy "Gun" Keating recording originals that were a little more mainstream. After taking a few years break to focus on family, Johnny, Leo, and Tommy regrouped back to their "power punk" 3 piece hard core roots to form "Raw Dog".

Over their twenty five years together as band mates, co-wrote and arranged all original material together. They recorded a number of unreleased songs at Comfort Sound, and Metalworks Studios; "In From the Cold", "I like Girls", "Television Religion", "Call of the Wild", "Anxiety" and "Kill 'Em All" and many more. Johnny returned to Cleveland for the "Dead Boys" reunion gig in 2004 at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland including a "question and answer" session at the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame". And a benefit concert at NYC's CBGB's in 2005. Johnny and Leo went their separate ways in 2007 Johnny still actively plays, writes and arranges with his band "The Highschool Hookers" and currently lives with his girlfriend in Toronto, Canada. Reformation, death of Bators
The Dead Boys reformed for several gigs in the 1980s. They re-released their first album as Younger, Louder and Snottier in 1989, mastered from a cassette tape of rough mixes, attributed to a young Bob Clearmountain, a studio assistant at the time.

In 1990, Bators died in France due to injuries sustained after having been hit by a taxi. In September 2004, the remaining members of the band re-formed for a one-off gig in Cleveland. In 2005, they played a benefit show for CBGB and another reunion show on Halloween.

The last album by So Cal Punk Legends The Skulls. In 2000, Billy Bones was introduced to James 'Hardslug' Harding (The Adicts) by a mutual friend, Keith Miller, who had performed with Bones in the past with other projects. After discovering Hardslug was also into performing music, a 'jam' was suggested and Bones (vocals), Miller (bass) and Hardslug(drums) got together, joined by a young Kevin Preston (guitar) who attended the same school as Bones' daughter. This band practiced by covering Skulls songs among others and was to be called the DB5's, apparently after Bones' favorite automobile and interest in old James Bond movies. A few weeks later, Bones was asked to put together a version of The Skulls to perform at the 'Tribute to 77' event at The El Rey in Los Angeles, where many of the early punk bands were to perform. That line-up was to be Bones (vocals), Preston (guitar), Sean 'Geronimo' Antillon (ex Gears, Snake Charmers) (drums, who'd also played with Bones at an impromptu quasi Skulls appearance a few years before) and Keith Miller on Bass. However, Miller had to bow out at the last minute and Bones asked Hardslug if he knew anybody who could jump in. The story goes that Hardslug bought a bass, learned the songs in a week, and after just a few rehearsals, the band nailed it at the El Rey. The new version of The Skulls was born, with the DB5 project left by the wayside.

The SKULLS’ soon released an album titled Therapy for the Shy on Dr. Strange Records containing mostly re-recorded Skulls songs written by the original members of 77, with the notable exceptions of: 'Gold and Ruby Red', a song written by Bones years earlier and subsequently rehashed, rearranged and 'punked-up' by Bones and Hardslug; 'Life Ain't So Pretty', another older composition given some Bones/Hardslug treatment and brought up to speed; 'Girlfriend, Shower, Sleep', a slice of fun by the new 4-piece; and finally an amazing cover of The Saints' 'Erotic Neurotic'. Various singles were also spawned from this release and, along with the CD and its Vinyl counterpart, all sold out fast.

In addition, The SKULLS appeared on three separate tribute compilation CD’s released by Cleopatra Records performing covers of AC/DC, Weezer and NOFX tunes. On realizing this surge of interest, The Skulls did some soul searching, wondering if their recent offerings were valid, bearing in mind they were mostly penned by past members of the band from nearly a quarter of a century before. The decision was made to write a brand new album from the ground up, with contributions from each of the new members, either solo or as collaborations. “The Golden Age of Piracy” was recorded in Los Angeles and Seattle and released in late 2003, again on Dr. Strange Records. Garnering 5 star reviews across the board, it contained 14 completely original songs and captured the energy the band was becoming renowned for in its live performances. This solidified the band's confidence as a 'new' band in its own right, and empowered them to press on with a slew of new material. Subsequent tours of the USA (including a string of dates on the Van's Warped Tour) and two tours of Europe established a large core following. Everyone who ever saw The SKULLS was amazed at the energy they delivered. Their recorded work is true to their live sound – To prove the point, The SKULLS then released a full-length LIVE DVD/CD (directed by Bad Otis Link) in 2004 on Finger Records. Titled “Night of the Living Skulls” the DVD featured a full live set from the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, a sell out show cited by many as being THE punk rock event of 2003. It also contained priceless interviews with key members of the US and UK punk scenes and special features, including skateboard mayhem, hidden ‘easter eggs’ and other features.

Just as things seemed to be going full tilt, Kevin Preston decided to quit the band to pursue a new project for which he would be front man, called Prima Donna. Almost immediately, Antillon also quit to pursue projects with The Weirdos, the Generators and other L.A. punk rock outfits with whom he'd been filling in over previous months, leaving a big void in the band just prior to another US and European tour. Both musicians left amicably and kindly made themselves available to assist in the selection and training of their replacements if required, a legacy of the tight family the four had become. Monster Matt, singer with Chicago based skate-punk band MONSTER TRUX, took on drumming duties and relocated from Chicago to California. Guitar duties were filled by Orange County resident Skot Snot and the band embarked on the US leg of their tour, however he was subsequently replaced by L.A. musician Nate Shaw (Duane Peters & The Hunns, etc.) for the European portion. Due to Shaw's other commitments with bands and studio projects, he couldn't commit to the live performance schedule ahead, so the band finally settled with talented Swedish guitarist and studio engineer Andy Andersson who relocated to Orange County, California from Sweden. Just when it seemed that The Skulls had finally settled back down, Billy Bones suddenly announced his wish to disband, citing many reasons: he did not want to drag the SKULLS name down by having all the line up changes; it was just time to move on and do something new and different, the need to spend time with his family, and, a discomfort with the creative direction of the last configuration of The Skulls. The band went on to play three final shows and called it a day amicably in April 2006.

Various – Beyond The Southern Cross (1984)

Nice double compilation album of alternative / electronic / post-punk / no wave bands from Australia and New Zealand.

Taken from the inner sleeve:

“The high point of Australian independent music occurred over the period 1978-81 when bands like Whirlywirld, Tactics, the Birthday Party, The Go-Betweens and The Laughing Clowns played some of the best gigs that part of the world is ever likely to see. But let’s not get overwhelmed by nostalgia. There is still a constant activity in the Australian indie field; old bands break up and their members form new ones; brand new bands appear and occasionally earlier bands re-form. Despite peaks and troughs, the sense that something is happening never totally disappears. This album contains a selection of independently records released over the last five years in Australia and compiled the past fifteen months. The idea was to highlight bands who never had overseas releases, although by the time, of the approached completion, two of the groups, Severed Heads, The Triffids, had been released in Britain. Also, Samurai Trash have now signed to Virgin Australia and can no longer be considered independent. Unsurprisingly, it is probably their track which most closely approaches a major company definition of “commerciality”. We by no means claim this LP to be definitive, merely illustrative. Some very good bands are not featured because they never got around to releasing a record, or if they did it didn’t do them justice. Several groups declined to appear on the compilation while others have been omitted because we never got to hear them. The collection has a strong Sydney bias — we received few records from elsewhere despite advertising in the national music press — but there are also bands from Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Newcastle and Wollongong. All the music was recorded in Australia except for The Clean who are from New Zealand.”

Beyond The Southern Cross was released as a double vinyl album by Ink Records (INK 4D) in 1984.

Whip Cracking Daddies - Playing With Knives

Jim Jeffries leads the Whip Crackin' Daddies through a fantastic debut.  Evil Psychobilly with Rockabilly and Punk influences, cooking up something new with some great original songs.

This hard rockin' trio is led by Jim Jeffries (Rancho Deluxe/Caravans/Mad Dog Cole), along with Paul "Choppy" Lamboure (Demented Are Go/Caravans/Nigel Lewis) and Mark Richards (Get Smart/Caravans/Rancho Deluxe).  With this line-up expectations are high - and this magnificently produced debut album deliveres everything you want and more.

Review:   You get the message straight away with the opening lyric ‘I’m gonna murder you baby’. This is sleazy rockabilly from the twilight zone, all tales of betrayal, sex and revenge sung in Jim Jeffries inimitable vocal style that is often accentuated with liberal amounts of distortion. The music is Rockabilly, but a very tough version with a definite edge. Some of the guitar solos go off on a very modern tangent that will delight those with a penchant for such dalliances away from the traditional. The rhythm section is a power house that propels the songs way past the pink pegged bubblegum world of the safe 50s into the murky underbelly little explored but often hinted at, themselves not afraid to deviate from the expected in timings and bass runs topping off an excellent album.   (Simon Nott)

Badluck Bandits

Originating out of Los Angeles, CA, the BadLuck Bandits are a new, young uprising band from the mean streets of Highland Park. Having influences from all types of music such as, Country, Rock n Roll, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Punk, Ska, Latin, Blues, and Jazz, the BadLuck Bandits incorporate all these sounds into their own. These rocking teens are Sammy Ruiz on guitar/lead vocals, Albert Muro on Bass/lead vocals, and David Cisneros on drums/backing vocals. Sammyboy brings a distinct sound into the band with his finger picking and crazy cords. Albert also brings a distinct sound with his solid bass lines. David kicks up and brings all the enegy into the band with his aggressive drumming and double bass drum beats. They have accomplished touring all of California and other nearby states. BadLuck Bandits have accomplished many things at a young age but they still have a long road ahead of them and there ain’t no stoping these Bandits because “WE’RE THE BADLUCK BANDITS HERE TO ROCK YOUR TOWN”

Smogtown ‎– Führers Of The New Wave

Even in Punk Rock Land (where the shows cost less than 10 dollars and having something black on is sort of a given), the Orange County band Smogtown is sort of underrated. They've been praised by Razorcake a shitload, but despite being one of the best 2000s punk bands, they play entirely in Southern California, and their records aren't distributed widely. I had to buy my copy of Fuhrers of the New Wave for 50 cents from a dealer on Amazon, and it came in a cracked and broken case (which I thought was kind of appropriate).

But this record, Fuhrers of the New Wave, kicks. fucking. ass! A concept album revolving around the New Wave, a suburbanite band, and the parents and yuppies trying to kick them out (along with Bodie 601), it's ambitious in a way, but is simple, fast, and indebted to Agent Orange and the Germs. It's an epic involving the Fuhrers as they try to bribe their way onto the radio ("Payola or Die"), deal with hatred from the concerned adults ("I Am the Cancer"), while teens deal with drugs, failure and living in residential living areas ("Standard Youth Dillema," "Judy's a Model").

When opener "I Am the Cancer" begins and ends with a sample of Repo Man, the most punk movie ever made, you know where you're at: the dark, nihilistic hole at the center of Los Angeles and all that surrounds it. Singer Chavez declares: "Something ugly reared its head in Surf City / Supposedly it's us." In "Teen Age," he declares that they're living in the Teen Age, as the dude described as Guitardo plays the sweetest, simplest damn riff.

This record makes me want to beat my boring hippie neighbors with a bat. Sure, the Fuhrers are kicked out by Bodie 601 (I still dunno what that is), but it feels good knowing that great punk bands like Smogtown are out there, still playing loud, angry music for any kid who doesn't really like living in that stupid house that looks like every single place on the street. They're out there.
