X Cops ‎– You Have The Right To Remain Silent

X-Cops was a side project composed of members from the band Gwar and their extended "family" of musicians. Each member of X-Cops performed in a police uniform and had their own character. They released the album You Have The Right To Remain Silent... on Metal Blade Records in 1995. The album included a cover of Deep Purple's "Highway Star" (with different lyrics, to reflect the theme of the album). In addition, they released a 7" single of the songs "Junkie" (featuring the first released vocal performance of Gwar/X-Cops guitarist Michael Derks) and "Beat You Down" on Man's Ruin Records in 1996.

Peter Lee started this band after being shot in a failed car jacking attempt. The idea sparked while filming a commercial segment for Gwar's Skulhedface. Lee and Dave Brockie were dressed as police officers and Lee pondered, "What would be cooler than a bunch of cops playing kick-ass rock and roll?" This led to Lee, Brockie and Gwar's drum technician, Mike Dunn, starting X-Cops as a three-piece band. By the time they played their first show, their ranks had grown considerably.

X-Cops opened for Gwar on some dates of their 1994 tour, essentially opening for themselves as every musician in Gwar either played an instrument or sang in X-Cops. They also did a headlining tour in 1995, and some select dates in 1996.

There are two additional songs that X-Cops performed live, but never officially recorded: "Nurture My Pig" (originally a song by The Loco Gringo's ), and "Conflict Management" (sung by Zipper Pig). According to bootleg videos, Casey Orr (Tubb Tucker) played bass for "Conflict Management", taking the bass from Dave Brockie (Cobb Knobbler), who sang back-up.

X-Cops played their final show in 1996 and Orr, Dunn, Lee, and Musel have since left both X-Cops and Gwar. Dave Brockie Experience has since been known to cover X-Cops songs during live shows. X-Cops will reunite for one show only at the 4th annual GWAR-B-Q in Richmond, VA, on August 17, 2013.

Gargoyles - Down On You EP

Based out of San Francisco, California, The Gargoyles formed in 1989 out of their love for the raw 70s vintage of The Dead Boys, The Stooges and Jeff Dahl. Originally consisting of Doug Heeschen (guitar), Julia Altstatt (bass), Lisa Lombardo (guitar), Tim Storm (vocals) and Brian Tyranny (drums), an accompanied inspiration of Russ Meyer and Roger Corman films fueled the band as they released a series of seven inches between 1990 to 1991. Shaken Street Records eventually debuted The Gargoyles first mini-LP Down on You in 1991, followed by the 1992 full-length Without End. By 1993 however, Neil Smith (guitar), Alison Victor (guitar) and Tony Palmer (bass) filled in for the departed Heeschen, Altstatt and Lombardo before the Inflexible mini-album came out in 1994. But by 1995, co-founder and front man Tim Storm relocated to Austin, Texas that year, thus ending The Gargoyles six year tenure

S.W.A.T. - Deep Inside A Cop's Mind

After suffering through an ill-conceived pornography trial centered on his misanthropic zine Answer Me, Jim Goad -- author of The Redneck Manifesto and other counterculture tomes -- moved to Portland, OR, to try and stir up trouble there. Goad soon hooked up with fellow travelers like Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey, industrial noisemaker Boyd Rice, and Thee Slayer Hippy (aka Steve Hanford) of hardcore heroes Poison Idea. S.W.A.T. is the product of the fertile imaginations of these underground icons, and Deep Inside a Cop's Mind is either the satirical "soundtrack to the new police state," as stated on the front cover, or a left-handed tribute to the boys in blue. Either way, the music, a mix of honky tonk-country and roots rock, is surprisingly good. Deep Inside a Cop's Mind opens with Ennio Morricone's classic "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" theme, with sampled vocals from the original Dragnet television series thrown in to set the table. With instrumental backing from most of Poison Idea (they had broken up by 1994), Parfrey leads the band through a haunting version of "The Pusher," adding contemporary lyrics to Hoyt Axton's anti-drug song and making more of a statement than Steppenwolf ever did. Truck-driving, road-happy country tunes like Dave Dudley's "Coffee, Coffee, Coffee" and Red Simpson's "Highway Patrol" are played fairly straight, changed slightly to reflect a cop's perspective and delivered with a rockabilly fervor. The Portland crew reinvents Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" as "Them From S.W.A.T.," complete with sampled LAPD radio broadcasts from the April 1992 riots. The highlight of Deep Inside a Cop's Mind, however, is a melodramatic reading of "In the Ghetto" featuring Goad's engaging baritone, the Elvis Presley hit now set in Compton with gangbangers, a drug deal gone bad, and, of course, the noble police officer. "We Can See for Miles" builds upon Pete Townshend's original with punkish glee, while Shel Silverstein's "25 Minutes to Go" is a shambling roller-coaster ride toward a date with the executioner. Spoken-word interludes between songs are mini-morality plays with a law enforcement theme delivered by Goad and Parfrey and folks like Boyd Rice and the Church of Satan's Anton LaVey. Deep Inside a Cop's Mind closes with a strange, spooky version of John Barry's "Thunderball" theme, with LaVey's videographer, Nick Bougas, on vocals. A very strange cultural artifact that only the '90s might have produced, Deep Inside a Cop's Mind is unlike any album you've ever heard, but it's well-worth digging up for collectors of the arcane and the unusual.
